Chael Sonnen is a man who is always willing to share his opinions on things. He has made a clean transition from being a cage fighter to one of the best analysts of the sport. His personal YouTube channel is wildly popular amongst fans. Despite this acumen and popularity, Sonnen can sometimes be antagonizing.
That came out on full display after he tweeted about Jan Blachowicz. Blachowicz became the new Light Heavyweight Champion with a win over Dominick Reyes at UFC 253.
However, Blachowicz went chasing ghosts in his post-fight interview. Instead of focusing on the future of the division, Jan called out former champion Jon Jones, who had already vacated the belt after announcing a move to Heavyweight.

Sonnen wasn’t impressed with Jan calling out Jones and made a bizarre comparison to it being similar to him calling out the long-retired Forrest Griffin.
Blachowicz calls out Jones, who has already vacated division. Might as well call out Forrest Griffin, GENIUS.

Chael Sonnen with a bad take?
It is odd to see Sonnen criticize Jan’s call-out. After all, Jones didn’t retire in 2013 and defended his belt less than a year ago. Jones is still an active fighter and hasn’t really committed to a heavyweight fight yet. Of course, Jan would want to be the first man to beat Jones and be the rightful champion.
The qualm against Daniel Cormier’s run as LHW champion was that he never beat Jones for it. While Jan wouldn’t face the same stigma, it must feel like a hollow win. He decimated Reyes, who beat Jones according to many.
There is a reason that Jan would focus on JBJ instead of contenders below him. Every fighter wants to be the best. But the saying goes that, ‘to be the best, you got to take out the best’. Jan beat the closest thing to it, but beating Jones is a different ball-game.

Jones has a near-perfect record, outside one DQ loss against Matt Hamill (12-6 elbows anyone?), Jan wants a chance at earning the belt by beating the man that held it for the better part of the previous decade.
The debate of G.O.A.T.s in the LHW division begins and ends at Jon Jones. It is odd that Sonnen would not appreciate the champion’s spirit that Jan is showing by calling Jones out.
