Since making his UFC debut in 2020, Khamzat Chimaev has been on a rampage running through his opponents, of course, with the exception of Gilbert Burns. Naturally, the Russian-born Swedish has been at the tip of everyone’s tongues. His personality and, most importantly, his performance have propelled him to sit at the third spot in the welterweight division. Thus, talks of a title fight against Leon Edwards were bound to come up.
Michael Bisping while conversing with Edwards, brought up Chimaev’s name, questioning Edwards’s opinion on ‘Borz’. In response, the current Welterweight champ gave an answer befitting the champion.

Leon Edwards on the prospect of fighting Khamzat Chimaev in the future
As Bisping and Edwards discussed multiple topics, Chimaev’s name was also brought up by the former Middleweight champ. When asked about the idea of facing the Swede, Edwards showed no hesitation in commending Chimaev. His exact words were, “He’s a good fighter. I don’t think he’s what the UFC was building him to be like this ‘Untouchable one’ thing. I think he’s a solid fighter. He’s good.”
Despite this admiration, Edwards clearly believes he can beat Chimaev. The welterweight champ even went on to say that Chimaev was someone he had his sights set on for the future.
“But you know there’s always ways to beat these guys. This is why I’m on a 10 -11 fight win streak … I know how to fight and like I said he’s one that’s on my list as well that I want to take out.”
Edwards vs Chimaev has fallen off thrice already
Interestingly, when other Welterweights were ducking Chimaev, Edwards was the one who agreed to face the Swede back in 2020 and 2021. The UFC initially scheduled the fight to take place on December 19, 2020, before Edwards had to pull out. A rescheduled date of January 20th the following year also did not come to fruition, as Chimaev had to back out this time. Coincidentally, COVID-19 was the reason they both had to pull out each time.
The third time the fight was set to take place was on March 13, 2021. Unfortunately, because of the lingering effects caused by the virus, Chimaev couldn’t continue with his preparations.

Edwards although doesn’t mind facing Chimaev, he wants to see the Russian-born fighter prove he can make 170 pounds.
“Let him go make weight probably fight Colby or something like that then we can run that one as well,” stated Edwards.

Leon Edwards has definitely set the ball rolling for a future big-money fight with this revelation. If the British star beats Usman in London, we could expect the promotion to set up a possible fight against Khamzat Chimaev. Although, Chimaev might also need to face another top welterweight before he lays his claim on the title.
