Magic Johnson has rarely ever shied away from praising his friends on public platforms. He loves to cheer for them while showering them with immense kindness and love. Earlier in the day, Johnson took to Twitter to celebrate actress Angela Bassett’s success. The Hall of Famer wrote, “Cookie and I want to congratulate our friend Angela Bassett on being nominated for an Oscar.” Bassett, a dear friend of the Johnsons, was nominated for her performance in Black Panther. This happened to be her second Academy nomination. Moments later, Johnson expressed that despite being over the moon, he was filled with a tinge of disappointment.
Cookie and I want to congratulate our friend Angela Bassett on being nominated for an Oscar! I hope she wins this time because she deserved to win when she played Tina Turner in What's Love Got to Do With It. @ImAngelaBassett

She should’ve been nominated. The film should be nominated. The Director should’ve been nominated. So many others …Extremely disappointing.

Viola only needs to walk on screen and it's Oscar worthy. One of the greatest presences in film history.

She and the film deserved to be nominated. So very disappointed. I told my mom it was the first time I truly saw the beauty of strength.
