Lewis Hamilton notched up his fourth world championship this season to move within one title of 1950s great, Juan Manuel Fangio. The British driver still hopes to move level with Fangio. But the 32-year old admitted that catching Michael’s 7 championships was a bit of a stretch.
Hamilton said, “I can’t see it at the moment, four more. It has taken me 10 years to achieve this four. I don’t have that desire to match it. Matching Fangio could be quite cool. Being that I am going to be here for at least another couple of years, that is my goal to try and at least get that. When I am older and look back, I don’t think the amount of titles I have is going to define what I am as a driver or who I am. How I work with the team, how I drive the car, every time I drive the car and extract it from the car – that’s what I feel inside defines me.”
Hamilton may not be eyeing Michael’s 7 championships, but he believes that he can equal Fangio’s record of 5 titles. Another record Hamilton can pursue is Michael’s 91 wins. Hamilton has 62 wins under his belt. With 21-race long calendars, It is entirely possible for him to catch Michael.
Hamilton was officially crowned a four-time F1 world champion at the FIA’s annual awards ceremony. Two weeks after the chequered flag fell on the 2017 F1 season, Hamilton was back in the limelight. The Englishman collected his fourth drivers’ title at a glittering ceremony at the Palace of Versailles in Paris. Alfa Romeo-Sauber’s newest recruit Charles Leclerc won the award for Rookie of the Year due to his exploits in F2.
