The Latvian, Anastasija Sevastova, ousted Maria Sharapova, out of the US open, in three sets of quality tennis. Sharapova was given a wild card into the tournament, and was drawn against the French open finalist, Simona Halep in the first round. Playing in just her fifth tournament this year(and her first grand slam event since her return from the doping ban), Sharapova has managed to silence a few critics with her game.
After having a torrid year on and off the court, and facing much criticism regarding her wild card entries, Sharapova seems to be pleased with her US open run. Players and media alike have been lashing out at her, for multiple reasons, but primarily due to the gifting of wild cards in tournaments such as Stuttgart, Madrid and now at the US open. Sharapova though, has been stoic through out her return and is pleased by the way she has managed to cope with the pressure. Sharapova said: “It’s been a really great ride in the last week. It’s great to get that major out of the way. It was an incredible opportunity. I’m very thankful for the opportunity. I did my best. I can be proud of that.” She also added-“I came in not playing a lot of matches. We all know that. Didn’t have much practice. Obviously it’s always disappointing to be on the losing end of things. But, reflecting back on the week, I can be happy.”
Sevastova had kind words for the former champion after her victory. There will have been a lot of players in the women’s locker room delighted about Sevastova’s victory, but she insisted she did not feel any extra obligation to beat Sharapova, she said-“I think some players have that,” she said. “I don’t have that. I have great respect for her. I was 14 years old, I was playing under-14, at a tournament, and she was winning Wimbledon the same day basically.
Her more-than-successful year, also means that she will move up the rankings and will require no more wild card favours from tournament directors next year, putting an end to the perennial debate about her doping ban and return.
