Victoria Azarenka has announced her withdrawal from the US open 2017, due to her ongoing custody battle with her ex (Billy McKeague), regarding her son Leo. Azarenka, who made a comeback after giving birth to her first child earlier this year in Mallorca and then Wimbledon, will be skipping the rest of the season.
Azarenka, who was the finalist in at the flushing meadows twice- going down both the times to Serena Williams in three sets, will surely be missed. Shortly before announcing her withdrawal from the tournament, she took to her Facebook page to post an emotional statement in which she stated that no working mother has to choose between her career and her child, and that the situation she was in was most unfortunate.
Azarenka said, “While I will dearly miss being in New York and playing in one of my favourite tournaments where I have enjoyed some of the best moments in my career, I am already looking forward to being back next year.”
Japan’s Misa Eguchi, will replace Azarenka at the final grand slam of the year. Pliskova and Halep will resume their battle for world no.1, while Muguruza will go into the final slam of the year as the clear favorite, after winning in Cincinnati. Johanna Konta, Wozniacki, and Venus Williams will be other potentials to watch out for.
