Justin Gaethje is the new interim lightweight champion! Yes, he pulled off the seemingly impossible!

Justin Gaethje went up against Tony Ferguson at UFC 249. The lightweight interim belt hung in the balance. Justin Gaethje put on the show of his lifetime. He absolutely dominated Tony Ferguson, to say the least. Tony took a lot on the chin and manages to keep going. But by the 5th round, he had taken enough.

Gaethje had plowed on for 5rounds straight. Halfway through the 5th round, a jab by Gaethje finally did it. Tony was left stargazing and the match was stopped. And there we had it, the underdog had risen to the occasion to prove his worth.

It was a joyous occasion for the new champion. And the delight was clear at his post-fight interview. Speaking with UFC News he said, “I haven’t had time to soak it in man. Can’t wait to watch the fight. I was so good tonight! I truly believed in my skill, my coaches, and man what a great time I just had. It was a great challenge and I’m very happy right now. I can’t wait to go home and see my family, that just feels great!”

He also spoke of his mindset stepping into the octagon. He said,” I don’t have any expectations when I step in there. Just be my best self and I was good tonight. My timing was incredible, my coaches are incredible. This was what I was born, bred, and raised to do.”

Justin Gaethje is clearly riding on a high and a well-deserved one that is. He is pumped and full of appreciation for life. He said, “You get one life and I’m living a crazy one and it’s so awesome. I can’t wait for that challenge (fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov) win or lose, don’t care, I’m going to give it 100 % that’s all I ever do. And I’m going to have a hell of a time!”

He’s on a pedestal and is ready for his next challenge. As of now, it’s time for Gaethje to soak this up and enjoy his moment.
