The recent incident of police brutality against George Floyd resulted in thousands of people standing in solidarity for the protection of racial rights. The worldwide gaming community has shown its support for the Black Lives Matter movement through numerous tweets and comments. And now, Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, has voiced his support as well.

Huge Corporate Support

Phil Spencer recently posted a tweet about racial injustice. He said that just preaching about it is not enough and that action has to be taken. In the tweet, he attached the link to an email from Satya Nadella, the CEO of Google.

United We Stand

Call of Duty: Mobile™ has included a dialogue box on their loading screen saying

“Our community is hurting. We are heartbroken by the systemic injustice and inequality experienced by the Black community. The Call of Duty: Mobile team stands for justice, inclusion, and equality for all. We ask you to join us in hearing the thoughtful voices that have risen so loudly and passionately to inspire a better future. We stand with you.”

Even the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare loading screen has included a similar message on their loading screen.

“Our community is hurting. The systemic inequalities our community experiences are once again centre stage. Call of Duty and Infinity Ward stand for equality and inclusion. We stand against the racism and injustice our black community endures. Until change happens and Black Lives Matter, we will never truly be the community we strive to be.”

This is probably the first time there is such huge corporate support towards the protesters, and it is true that the video game community has never been so vocal about the Black Lives Matter agenda.

Sony has postponed its PlayStation 5 reveal event saying that the company wanted to stand back and let more important voices be heard. Similarly, EA Games postponed the release of NFL Madden 21, since the series is deeply rooted in American culture and the black community.

Just a stunt?

Although this is not the right way of looking at it, some people do consider this to be a mere publicity stunt. It is true that it looks like a race between the companies to see who can provide more support, in order to gain more popularity.

Either way, we hope that all this results in brighter dawn at the end of this dark night.
