Moreover, DJ  and Cena had a very heated on-screen rivalry during the buildup to their WrestleMania 28 bout. During one segment, Cena even took shots at ‘The Rock’ for having his promo on his wrist. It was a moment that was completely unscripted and left Dwayne aghast.

But the reason for this rivalry being so personal was the comments Cena had made about ‘The Great One’ a couple of years before their on-screen rivalry.

Cena regrets making comments over The Rock’s Hollywood career

In a 2010 interview, John Cena said that Dwayne Johnson shouldn’t talk about loving wrestling when he is happy doing Hollywood movies.

Cena said, he’s a very good actor, he’s very successful, he’s done very well for himself, and associating with sports entertainment doesn’t do much for his acting career, so I get why he doesn’t come back. Just, don’t f*** me around and tell me that you love [wrestling] when you’re just doing it to do something else.”

The Rock obviously didn’t respond kindly to these comments, and the two engaged in a very real and personal feud on TV later.

Looking back now, ‘The Cenation Leader’ has admitted he was wrong about the People’s Champ and regrets making those comments.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated, he said, “It was stupid of me. It really was. That was my perspective at the time. “For me to not be able to see Dwayne’s vision on what he wanted to do personally, and how his personal success could affect a growing global brand, that was just ignorant on my part.”

“His success has given me many opportunities that I’m extremely grateful for, and I certainly wouldn’t have had them without him,” he added.

Now, the hatchet seems to be well and truly buried between the two mega stars. Moreover, Dwayne Johnson has even gone on to say that John Cena is one of his best friends.

Cena has followed in the footsteps of Dwayne Johnson

Interestingly and ironically enough, John Cena has followed in the Hollywood footsteps of The Rock. He even starred in the Fast and Furious franchise, which had Johnson as its titular star for some time.

Currently, both Cena and The Rock are part of the DC Extended Universe. The 16-time WWE champion impressed Hollywood as the anti-hero ‘Peacemaker’ in Suicide Squad, with the character getting its own TV show as well.
