It won’t be wrong to say that Arnold Schwarzenegger, a bodybuilding legend and Hollywood celebrity, served as an inspiration for many other well-known luminaries. In addition, he had a strong influence on the pro wrestling community. Notably, on a legendary wrestler whose bout with The Undertaker was the stuff of fans’ dreams.

Making your mark in a talent-filled industry when you have little experience is a massive success. However, Austrian Oak was able to become a significant influencer due to his popularity. In one episode of ‘AEW Uncensored’, WCW icon Sting talked about his unique connection to the Austrian Oak.

On the podcast, Sting was questioned about how his illustrious pro wrestling career began. He claimed that he had little interest in professional wrestling and that Arnold Schwarzenegger’s success in Hollywood had encouraged him to pursue a career as an actor.

He stated, “I was bartending in a nightclub, I was bouncing in the nightclub, I was auditioning for movies with no acting experience whatsoever. So I was reaching, I was trying to get somewhere, you know? Arnold Schwarzenegger was making all his movies and I’m like, he didn’t even speak English in the beginning. Look at him now. If he can do it…I got to be able to do this. You know, I wanted something and so, I thought, maybe, I’ll try this.”

Undoubtedly, 7-time Mr. Olympia was an inspiration considering that he struggled with his English and yet managed to succeed in the Hollywood business. Given that Austrian Oak had a significant effect on Sting and that his first goal was to become an actor rather than a wrestler.

How did WCW legend switch to professional wrestling after taking inspiration from Arnold Schwarzenegger?

In the same interview, Sting claimed that producer and talent agent Rick Bassman had come to him as he at the time co-owned Gold’s Gym in Reseda. Bassman was looking for a place to train his three wrestlers. Then, after asking Sting to give them the place, Bassman extended an invitation for him to become the fourth member of the group.

The rest, as they say, is history. He rose to fame as the most recognizable superstar to enter a ring. He had such an influence that one of WWE’s biggest lost balls was not getting Sting vs Taker match.
