At UFC 288, Aljamain Sterling and Henry Cejudo battled for the UFC Bantamweight Championship. The former won the match and retained his title by a split decision. After the fight, Sean O’Malley entered the ring and confronted the champion.

The faceoff quickly turned into a heated confrontation where both the MMA stars trash-talked each other and almost lead to an altercation. If it weren’t for the UFC officials, it looked like both the stars were ready to tear each other down. Recently, The Funk Master gave a piece of his mind about his heated confrontation with Suga Sean.

UFC took a page from the WWE book, says Aljamain Sterling

During the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani show, Sterling commented on his in-cage confrontation with O’Malley after UFC 288. He said UFC is utilizing WWE’s tactics to pique the audience’s interest. He added that the motive behind this was to create a buzz in the MMA world. And he believes they were successful in their attempt.

UFC’s parent company, Endeavour, bought WWE for $21 billion dollars last month. Therefore, it is trying to make the best use of its latest acquisition, even if it is to use just a simple tactic to garner audience attention. WWE is famous for booking in-ring confrontations to spice up things for an upcoming match.

That being said, it was very unusual that Dana White let O’Malley storm inside the octagon to have a face-off with Sterling. In fact, in a recent interview, he admitted it was not a good idea to let it happen.

White regrets allowing the O’Malley-Sterling Cage Faceoff

Following the conclusion of UFC 288, White addressed the media in a post-event conference. During the conference, one interviewer asked him to shed light on his decision to let Suga Sean confront The Funk Master after his successful title retention.

White admitted that he regretted letting the two have an in-cage confrontation at UFC 288. He said, I have a better ideas than what I did tonight. Not a great idea, but he’s next.” Given the incident, it was pretty clear that Sterling’s next opponent in line was O’Malley. And during the conference, the UFC President reiterated that having the bantemweight stars confront each other was a bad idea.

He also mentioned a tentative timeline for the bout. He said that the match will take place in August and the place will probably be Boston, New York. Are you excited to see Sterling vs Sean square off against each other inside the octagon?
