There have been certain athletes throughout history who have played the arrogant, ‘better than everyone’ character with perfection. Pro wrestling star Ric Flair, boxing icon Floyd Mayweather and UFC’s bad boy Conor McGregor are a few of the names who epitomize the rich, bad boy gimmick over the years. But it seems former UFC Champion Ronda Rousey isn’t a big fan of this whole schtick.

She once called out the likes of Mayweather and McGregor for their portrayal of the ‘arrogant rich athlete’. ‘The Rowdy One’ believes that presenting money as a motivation to be the best isn’t ideal.

Ronda Rousey took a dig at McGregor and Mayweather for their personas

Ronda Rousey has gained worldwide fame and popularity because of her combat sports career. From judo to MMA and now pro wrestling, Rousey has found success after success. Her commitment to each of these sports has been tremendous. The motivation to be the best wherever she goes fuels the current SmackDown Champion.

Although Rousey herself isn’t oblivious to fame and money, she put things in perspective during an interview before her fight against Amanda Nunes at UFC 207. She had suffered her first defeat at the hands of Holly Holm at UFC 193 and it made her realize that maybe money isn’t everything.

She told ESPN The Magazine in 2016 that the gimmicks of Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather and Conor McGregor do not impress her. ‘The Baddest Woman on the Planet’ said, “If money is the motivation, then f*ck you. All these Money people. … Money Mayweather, Money McGregor. I see they’re trying to do an angle or whatever. People buy it.”

Moreover, she further said that although it is the easiest way to entertain, it isn’t the right way. Rousey added, “The worship of money in our society is so deep. But just because that’s the easiest way to keep people’s attention or entertain them doesn’t mean that’s the right way.”

Rousey was an Olympian Judoka, which required immense hard work with little monetary gain. This is something she experienced despite winning the bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She put a lot on the line, but it hardly paid back in terms of financial growth. As such, she has always put the motivation of being the best as first while the money is just a by-product of her success.

Also, for McGregor and Mayweather, it is understandable as they go through a lot in their sports, they may feel they have earned the right to portray whatever character they feel like in public. Indeed, different prospects motivate people for success. Notably, McGregor and Mayweather fought in a boxing match in 2017, billed as ‘The Money Fight’.

Mayweather won the fight by a technical knockout in the 10th round. The boxer reportedly ended up making $280 million from the fight, while McGregor took home $130 million.
