WWE outright shocked the world this Friday when retired wrestler turned WWE official, Adam Pearce, emerged as the top contender for Roman Reigns at Royal Rumble 2021. Reigns orchestrated Pearce’s victory towards the end of the gauntlet match.
Although fans believe Shinsuke Nakamura should be the number one contender, there is more to the story. After the controversial ending, we might have a reason why Pearce was chosen after all.

On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed why Pearce ‘won’ the gauntlet match. He believes it is just a ploy before WWE shifts back to Reigns vs Kevin Owens once again.
“It’s possible that they’ll change it back to Kevin Owens because it seems like a strange match to make; because if they do that, it pretty much tells you that they literally have no ideas at all. I’m not ruling out that they’ll go back to Kevin Owens,” Meltzer noted.
Reports had stated that Reigns will clash with Kevin Owens at Royal Rumble before he heads to WrestleMania. Before this, Meltzer previously also said how Pearce is getting more screen time as WWE does not want someone to overshadow the stars.
They just need someone in the role but don't want a personality to overshadow the stars. https://t.co/oteNxmLEgw

Adam Pearce wanted to face someone else in the ring
Before he was a WWE official, Pearce was a 5-time NWA World Champion. He is also an NWA Hall of Famer and a former coach at WWE Performance Center.
During a recent podcast with Corey Graves, Pearce revealed who he would like to face on the current roster. Although he was reluctant in doing so, Pearce named Randy Orton as his potential opponent.

“However, you know what man, I want Randy Orton to run his mouth just a little bit too much to WWE official Adam Pearce so he can he eat the same right hand your nose did way back when.

“I don’t know, maybe the same WWE official Adam Pearce has to make a match, or maybe the chairman says ‘No you put your foot in your mouth’ and now you have to have a match against the Viper and he RKOs me in 30 seconds,” revealed Adam Pearce.
Pearce and Reigns will have a confrontation on next week’s SmackDown. We will have to wait and see what happens to know the reality of Meltzer’s speculations.
