On the latest edition of SmackDown (5/7/21), Cesaro defeated his WrestleMania 37 rival, Seth Rollins. With the victory, Cesaro also got his hands on the number one contendership for Roman Reigns’ Universal title at WrestleMania backlash.
Following the throwback edition of SmackDown, Cesaro spoke to WWE in a backstage interview. Considering how it is his first contendership for the title, Cesaro was quite overwhelmed, but he knew who to dedicate the opportunity to.
“Roman talked a lot about family, he talked about love,” Cesaro recalled. “I feel overall of the years, my family has been the WWE Universe. It sounds so cheesy, but it is really true.”

Cesaro said whenever he needed a ‘pick-me up’ or a laugh, he went to the ring to perform. No matter what his designation was, fans were always there to support him.
“I wanna bring that Universal title back to my family. I wanna bring it back to the WWE Universe,” Cesaro said. As the world opens up and gets back to the ‘new normal’, Cesaro wants to be the one to bring the title back to the fans in the arenas all over the world.
“You gave me the energy to do what I did tonight. So next Sunday at WrestleMania backlash, it’s gonna be for you,” Cesaro said while thanking the fans. “Just like I said on Talking Smack, I love what I do, and love always wins.”
Cesaro is confident to take on Roman Reigns
The ‘Swiss Cyborg’ won the contendership following a win against Seth Rollins and an interruption from a returning Jimmy Uso. As the Reigns family drama got more intense towards the end of the night, Cesaro returned and leveled Roman Reigns, Jey, and Jimmy Uso.
Cesaro posted on Instagram following the match and revealed how this title opportunity is extra-special to him.
“I think it’s fitting that I earned my first chance at a world/universal title on a throwback edition of SmackDown.”
