Back in 2010, a band of eight rookies from NXT ambushed the main roster, attacking John Cena. Under the leadership of Wade Barrett, the group had a feud against John Cena and other top stars. However, their storyline became boring, and CM Punk was brought in as the new enforcement.

Wade Barett was exiled as Nexus’s leader after he lost a steel cage match against Randy Orton and Sheamus. CM Punk got the new position as the leader and renamed the group The New Nexus. He was previously the leader of another cult-like group called the “Straight Edge Society.”

On their first interaction, Punk asked the members to beat each other down as part of the “initiation process.” While Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel left the group, the rest of the members stayed and formed the new group.

Later on, Mason Ryan joined the New Nexus. CM Punk gave a lesson to his group on the power of faith. Before Royal Rumble, the group had a meeting where Punk said, “You’ve all made great sacrifices to prove you belong in Nexus.” “With the power of sacrifice,” the new Nexus will make sure CM Punk wins the Battle Royale and goes to WrestleMania.

When Husky Harris asked what if Punk gets eliminated before any of the members enter the match, Punk asked them not to think about the negatives.“Have faith. All of you have faith,” Punk urged the members as they took a knee.

CM Punk went to WrestleMania but not as he wanted

As Husky dreaded, Punk indeed entered the battle royale as the number one participant. Although he lasted the longest in the match and eliminated seven people, in the end, John Cena eliminated him.

However, the group soon started feuding with Randy Orton. Over the next weeks, Orton defeated all The New Nexus members, causing several storyline injuries by punting them. Orton defeated Punk on two occasions, first at WrestleMania and then at Extreme Rules.

After this feud with Orton, Nexus members lost momentum due to multiple injuries. CM Punk would later become the number one contender for Cena’s WWE Championship at Money in the Bank. Later on, he dropped his infamous pipe bomb.

Later on, several members of Nexus became prominent WWE members. Nexus rose to new heights under Punk’s leadership due to his previous stature as the Straight Edge Society leader.
