Drew McIntyre has suffered a major setback before WWE Payback. As per the company, the WWE Champion has suffered a hairline jaw fracture.
This was after Randy Orton delivered three vicious punt kicks to McIntyre on Raw. ‘The Scottish Psychopath’ was immediately loaded into an ambulance and taken to a medical facility.
WWE had initially reported that the Champion might have suffered skull fracture and internal brain bleeding. In fact, the injury was even being called career threatening.

As is obvious, this is all part of kayfabe. McIntyre is not actually injured but only selling the devastating effects of the punt kick. To be honest, that became kind of necessary after Shawn Michaels completely no sold the move.

Why has Drew McIntyre been written off?
I can see two possible reasons for this course of action. The first one is a little obvious.
McIntyre is not available for WWE Payback and the company needs a justification for his absence. Only a devastating injury can keep the Champion from avenging the brutal beatdown that he was subjected to.
The second reason is a bit more intriguing. McIntyre is not actually injured. Hence, there is nothing concrete stopping him from returning. He might sport a brace or something that supports his jaw and still interfere in the match.

This serves a dual purpose. Firstly, it allows McIntyre to look like a legit powerhouse who can’t be held back even with a career thretening injury. Secondly, it protects both Randy Orton and Keith Lee from a defeat.

At the stage, neither of the two can afford a loss. This also opens up the possibility of Lee challenging McIntyre in the future. After all, this would be the second straight week that McIntyre interferes in his match up.
