WWE NXT Women’s Champion Raquel Gonzalez has been unstoppable recently. Since she allied herself with industry veteran Dakota Kai, the duo has been reaching new heights on the black-and-gold brand.

Raquel debuted in WWE in 2017 after having trained at the Performance Centre for one year. She only had four appearances until her full stint in 2020.

On the other hand, Dakota was a prominent name on the indie circuit before she came to WWE in 2016. In comparison with Raquel, Dakota received a better push but failed to win any titles.

“I will definitely say that my confidence has grown tremendously since I partnered up with Dakota,” Raquel told WWE’s The Bump. “She’s been doing this a lot longer than I have so she really brings in this veteran type of style this team needs.

Dakota’s experience has seeped into Raquel and has shaped her journey to be the NXT Women’s Champion. Raquel learned a lot from her.

One thing I’ve really taken from this, is no matter what is thrown at us, no matter what position we’re in; whether she’s running for the title, whether I’m running after Rhea, or we’re running after the Dusty cup together, we are literally putting our best foot forward, and keeping our eye on what the prize is and that is being the most dominant women in NXT.”

Dakota Kai focuses more on her in-ring relationship with Raquel Gonzalez than anything else

Despite being in the 14th year of her pro-wrestling, Dakota focuses more on personal relationships than her impact on the newer generation. Coincidentally, Raquel was Dakota’s first opponent in WWE Performance Center.

I just think about us being good friends, and working together and really getting along, and building our team work together,” said Dakota. “We do that for each other. Raquel’s confidence has really grown.”

“Looking at the growth she’s had, it’s insane! It’s night and day. She has done that for me too, she has really helped me step out of my shell and tackle these bigger matches with more confidence.”

In 2020, Kai and Gonzalez teamed up with each other. After some initial backlashes, the duo signed up for the inaugural Women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic and won the competition.

This win gave them an opportunity against then-women’s Tag Team champions, Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler.

However, they were robbed of that opportunity. As a retaliation, NXT General Manager William Regal crowned them as the inaugural NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions. Although they lost it in a span of an hour, Raquel soon won the NXT Women’s title from Io Shirai at NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver.
