NFL canceled the game on Monday between Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills following the gruesome hit Damar Hamlin had. The Bills star was quickly rushed to the hospital following the unfortunate tragedy.
Surprisingly, following the incident, wrestling fans started taking a shot at WWE and Vince McMahon. They recalled a similar tragedy that happened at a WWE PLE in 1999 which led to the passing away of a superstar.

The injury took place when Hamlin tackled Bengals’ wide receiver Tee Higgins and got up after that. Shockingly, the 24-year-old quickly collapsed after he stood up.
The players of both teams came to check on Hamlin as the medics arrived. They brought a stretcher to carry the Bills player as the athletic trainers protected his head.
As ESPN covered, Hamlin’s agent said, “Please continue to pray for Damar and his family. We currently have no update at this time. Will ask that you keep the family in your prayers.”
Everybody present on the field was shocked and were looking for an update about Hamlin. They gave him CPR and were on the field for around 16 minutes before the ambulance came to take him to the hospital.
Similarly, in 1999, Owen Hart fell hard in the ring, while making an entrance from the rafters. He was portraying the Blue Blazer character at the time and wanted to do a superhero entrance, which he had done once.
However, while being lowered into the ring, Hart fell 78 feet, landing chest-first on the top rope and throwing him into the ring. The former Intercontinental champion passed away moments after the accident, but Vince McMahon kept the show running.
Fans slam WWE for running the show in 1999 after the NFL canceled the game
The wrestling fans brought in a 24-year-old incident amidst Damar Hamlin’s incident. NFL canceled the game on Monday between Bills vs Bengals. The fans recalled Mr. McMahon kept running Over the Edge PLE after they announced Hart passed away because of the tragic accident.
Subsequently, the Twitter users slammed WWE for not doing what the NFL did recently, i.e. canceling the game after Hamlin was taken to the hospital.
This user recalls Hart’s accident and says WWE should have done the same.
They did what the @wwe should have done after Owen Hart died during a pay per view 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 prayers for Damar Hamlin 🙏🏽

I've never seen anything like this Damar Hamlin situation. Truly scary stuff.
Always tough call to stop a game, but it's been almost 24 years and I still can't believe WWE continued after Owen Hart. Play should be suspended for the evening. Who wants to play after all this?

Anyone else watching the Damar Hamlin situation unfold and, sadly, thinking about wrestler Owen Hart who fell to his death during a live WWF (WWE) pay-per-view in 1999? Insane to think back to them announcing Hart’s death live and then just… continuing the show.

Was WWE right moving forward with the show?
This is how you react in a tradgedy. I still can’t believe @VinceMcMahon went on with the show after Owen Hart died. The @WWE should take some notes.https://t.co/ekR3xISUyA

Owen Hart was legitimately the first thing I thought of as a possible comparison to this. Vince McMahon obviously made them finish the show knowing Owen was dead because he's a piece of shit https://t.co/f98ftneaLR

Praises for the NFL for canceling the game.
The NFL game cancellation tonight was the right call, not like the WWE which continued a pay per view after one of its stars – Owen Hart – died after falling to his death during his ring entrance. Hopefully Damar Hamlin pulls through.

🙏🙏🙏Damar Hamlin. Call off the game Mr. commissioner. WWE made the mistake resuming PPV during that unfortunate tragic death of Owen Hart. #SWR

People saying WWE cotinued a pay-per-view after Owen Hart's death in 1999 obviously forgot that NASCAR continued a race in 1991 following J. D. McDuffie's death. NFL did the right thing by suspending play following Damar Hamlin's collapse. Prayers for Damar.

Prayers for the 24-year-old Bills player.
For any NFL fans that also followed WWF (or WWE if you prefer) in 1999, you'll probably understand how this whole night feels eerily similar to Owen Hart in Kemper Arena.
Owen didn't make it, praying Damar Hamlin does.

The fans clearly have Hamlin in their prayers, but they are also upset with WWE for not canceling the show 24 years ago in 1999.

Hamlin was quickly rushed to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. The Bills player’s family came down as the ambulance was ready to leave to the medical center.
He was in critical condition and they took him to the local hospital. As per the league’s statement covered by ESPN, “Hamlin received immediate medical attention on the field by team and independent medical staff and local paramedics.”
Neither the Cincinnati Medical Center nor Buffalo Bills and NFL have released any update regarding Hamlin’s health. They will provide updates once the hospital shares with them. This was indeed an unfortunate incident and our prayers are with Damar Hamlin and his family and the Buffalo Bills.
