The go-home show for the Royal Rumble was a stellar one, with hype for the pay-per-view reaching a fever pitch. WWE pulled out all the stops to ensure the final episode of SmackDown before the PPV looks terrific. From Roman Reigns and Kevin Owens to AJ Styles and Daniel Bryan, SmackDown was a fun episode from start to finish.

AJ Styles and Daniel Bryan kick off WWE SmackDown

The show kicked off with Daniel Bryan cutting a passionate promo about his wish to headline WrestleMania once more. Standing in his way was Monday Night Raw’s AJ Styles. Bryan challenged Styles to a match on SmackDown, which the Phenomenal One accepted graciously.

Bianca Belair and Bayley carried on with their intense rivalry, when the two women’s division Superstars met in their second singles match. Bianca leveled the score between them at 1-1 after planting Bayley with the KOD for the 1, 2 and 3. The EST of WWE heads into the Royal Rumble with all the momentum in the world.

Baron Corbin defeated Dominik Mysterio in a quick squash match. Rey Mysterio’s progeny did not even have a chance against the former King of the Ring. Corbin then suffered a seated senton to the outside, courtesy of Rey Mysterio.

Big E tried to bribe Sonya Deville with a $1 bill to reveal what number he drew at the Royal Rumble. This prompted Raw superstars Miz and Morrison to show up, sparking a brawl between the MITB holder and the Intercontinental Champion. Reginald, Carmella’s fabulous assistant, tried to charm Sasha Banks with a bottle of wine, but scurried once she threatened to break his employer’s jaw.

The segment between Roman Reigns and Kevin Owens was pure fire. Both Reigns and Owens cut scathing promos and even got personal as they each talked trash about the opposite’s family. Owens looked fierce as he ripped the Tribal Chief to shreds, calling him a bully and a ‘delusional jacka**’.

Main event descends into chaos and confusion

WWE scheduled AJ Styles vs Daniel Bryan to be the main event of the night. Unfortunately, the dream match descended into absolute chaos after Sami Zayn, Big E and Cesaro interfered. This led to a huge six-man tag team match, which would also end in a lame disqualification after the Miz and John Morrison, and former MITB holder Otis interfered.

A giant ten-man tag team match was booked with Sheamus becoming the surprise fifth member of Team Bryan. He picked up the win with a massive Brogue Kick to Sami Zayn but was soon attacked by the heels. Out came the returning Braun Strowman, who leveled everything in his path and cemented himself as the favourite to win the Rumble match.

Despite the chaos and confusion in the main event, WWE SmackDown got us hyped for the Royal Rumble.
