“You Have Left a Legacy”: Stephanie McMahon Sends a Congratulatory Message to WNBA Icon Sue Bird Following Her Retirement

Iconic WNBA player Sue Bird retired from the sport after her side Seattle Storm lost to Las Vegas Aces in the playoffs. Following her retirement, some of the big names from the sport and beyond congratulated Bird for an amazing career.

The 41-year-old Bird won 4 WNBA Championships during her time with the franchise. The Seattle Storm guard was also a 13-time All-Star, a record for WNBA players.

Immediately after her retirement, quite a few notable names congratulated Sue Bird on an astonishing career that spanned 21 years. As she brought an end to a glittering career congratulatory messages flooded in from people belonging to different spheres.

WWE’s co-CEO Stephanie McMahon was among those who extended their wishes to the WNBA icon.

Taking to Twitter McMahon wrote, “Congratulations on an incredible career, @S10Bird! You have left a legacy many young athletes will look up to for a long, long time.”

McMahon’s tweet should come as no surprise as she has been an advocate for women being given their due in sports. In the past, she has also extended her support for the US Women’s national soccer team.

A number of basketball icons as well as celebrities also praised Bird. NBA great Stephen Curry said, “Legend. Take a bow,” on Twitter.

Former NBA player Jamal Crawford said Bird’s retirement this year alongside other athletes will have an impact for generations. He said, “Sylvia Fowles. Sue Bird. Serena Williams. Allyson Felix. We may never see four of the greatest retire in the same year, from three different sports again. The impact will be felt for generations. Respect.”

Bird retires as a legend

Sue Bird was without a doubt trailblazer, not just in basketball but women’s sports at large. She retires as the player with the most assists and games played in WNBA history.

Apart from winning the WNBA title for four times, she held many other accolades. Bird won the Olympic gold medal with the US national basketball team five times.
