John Cena has always shown unlimited resilience in his matches whenever he steps into the squared circle of WWE. The 16-time WWE Champion has garnered a reputation for his “never give up” motto and never backed down from a challenge. And according to a recent revelation, he pulled through an epic match despite indulging in heavy drinking for nine days.

The phone call that forced John Cena to stop a fun night

John Cena has an outgoing and fun personality that appeals to the entire WWE Universe. While Cena has shown his fun side in the WWE arena, he also has a tendency to go wild. During a WWE tour to Europe in 2007, the Hollywood star had to make a hurried exit from a party. The 46-year-old indulged in a bout of heavy drinking when he heard the unfortunate news.

Speaking about the incident on Chris Van Vliet’s podcast, Coachman said that Cena left because of a phone call from Vince McMahon. John Cena beat Shawn Michaels to retain the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 23. The responsibilities of a champion found him as he was asked to go against Shawn Michaels again on short notice on RAW in a non-title match.

Coachman said, “All of a sudden Dean Malenko walks up, whispers something in his ear and Cena takes the beer and sets it on the counter, walks to the elevator disappears.” The former WWE commentator then revealed what had actually transpired. Continuing the story he said, “I said Dean what did you just say to him and he goes ‘well we just got a call from Vince and he’s going 60 minutes tomorrow night with Shawn Michaels in an Ironman match.” Coachman is slightly off the mark here as Cena and Michaels did go for nearly an hour on RAW, but it wasn’t an Ironman match.

Cena had less than 24 hours to recover for the match. To make matters worse, Cena had incurred a hangover after participating in a nine-day straight alcohol consumption barrage.

While the then WWE champion did show up the next day for the match, Coachman said, “He comes out and you could smell the alcohol coming out of his pores.!” The former RAW commentator also credited Cena and Shawn Michaels for the wonderful show they gifted the audience.

Cena and Michaels did deliver a match for the ages as the two stars entertained the crowd for 60 minutes. In the WrestleMania rematch, HBK came out on top in the non-title bout. While this incident is humorous in itself, the punchline lies in the fact that it was Ric Flair who set Cena up to drink.

In fact, according to Coach, John Cena had never even touched alcohol.

Ric Flair asked Cena to behave like a ‘real champion’

According to the former WWE personality, John Cena was a teetotaler until a few days before his epic showdown against Shawn Michaels. Coachman revealed that Flair asked Cena to behave like a real champion and pay for all the drinks. Not ignoring the words of his legendary senior, the WWE icon obliged and took the tab upon himself.

Nevertheless, since he undertook the responsibility to pay for everything, he decided that he might as well enjoy himself. The iconic wrestler drank with everyone else as well to make it a special occasion. Despite being a novice at drinking, Coachman revealed that Cena went ham. The Hollywood star drank anything and everything and went hard at it for nine consecutive days according to the story.
