The confusion is mostly over why Orton’s fourteenth reign is coming now and not earlier in the summer. Orton was the hottest star in wrestling early in the summer.

Fresh off his win against Edge, Randy needed something to legitimize him as the top heel in the business. A feud over the WWE Championship seemed ideal.

Drew McIntyre was killing it as the WWE Champion. Beating Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania is no easy feat, but McIntyre kicked Lesnar’s head off and became the first Scot to win the WWE Title.

The reign that followed was nothing short of superb. His matches against Seth Rollins, Bobby Lashley and Dolph Ziggler were all excellent, cementing him as an excellent champion.

McIntyre walked into his biggest test yet against Randy Orton at SummerSlam. The Viper took McIntyre to the absolute limit. Orton was one RKO away from sealing the deal, but McIntyre eked out a victory courtesy of a backslide pinning combination. Drew walked away with the title but Randy lost a significant amount of momentum.

The Viper lost a lot of momentum

Over the summer, Orton had been punting WWE legends in the skull. He even fractured Drew McIntyre’s jaw in a heinous attack. However, the loss to McIntyre at SummerSlam and a shock defeat to Keith Lee at Payback derailed the Viper’s momentum.

Orton’s rematch at Clash of Champions was also marred by interruptions by Big Show, Christian and Shawn Michaels. Orton looked set to win the title, but the interruptions from the legends allowed McIntyre to retain the title.

Randy’s momentum was at an all-time low heading into Hell in a Cell, but his win over McIntyre came completely against the run of the momentum. This led to total confusion amongst the WWE locker room over Orton going over.

The title change brings up the possibility of an Edge vs Randy Orton match at WrestleMania 37 for the WWE Championship. Even though this seems like a good idea, this means fans have to endure a five month Randy Orton title reign, which is not exactly one fans would be excited about.
