Former WWE, WCW, and ECW referee Mickie Jay died Monday evening due to COVID-19. Jay was most notably known for his time with WWE from 2005. However, there was a time in his career when he wrestled The Undertaker in WWE back in the early 90s.

Mickie Jay breathed his last breath at 59 years old and lived in Key West, Florida. The former referee lived in Florida for over two decades before finally leaving for his Heavenly abode.

Mickie Jay had a match with The Undertaker

However, before being a referee, Mickie tried his hand in wrestling and worked as a professional wrestler in various promotions. Eventually, Mickie found himself in Vince McMahon’s company in the early 90s.

During this time, Mickie was used as an enhancement talent where he happily jobbed out to other wrestlers. Back in 1992, Mickie wrestled The Undertaker for a match in front of the live audience.

Now, this was the era of The Undertaker, so naturally, The Phenom quickly buried Mickie in the mattress with a tombstone. Eventually, moving on with his life as a referee, Jay worked with Ted Turner’s WCW in 1992.

Mickie stayed with WCW for a while. But he didn’t move to WWE in 2001 when Vince McMahon bought out his competition. However, WWE did hire him in 2005, where he worked for Raw, SmackDown, and ECW for nearly four years until 2009.

But while he was with WWE, Mickie started having various health issues and he just couldn’t keep up with the busy road schedule of the company and was released in 2009.

Upon hearing the tragic news of his death, WWE took to its Twitter handle and expressed gratitude for the former WWE and WCW referee and honored his legacy in this business.

Famous American podcaster Mike Tenay also took to his Twitter and noted that today marks the end of his relationship with Mickie Jay. He also noted that they were friends for over 30 years and the business has lost a real gem this year.

“There have been a rash of wrestling related deaths lately, but the passing of Mickie Jay Henson really hurts. A close friend for over 30 years. Best known as a referee for WCW and WWE, but he was equally proud to have been the president of the Bobby Heenan Fan Club in his youth.” He wrote.
