The feeling of relief was palpable once McIntyre pinned Goldberg. Never have fans been so happy to see McIntyre retain the WWE Title, proving how far he’s come since winning the coveted championship.

The brawl between McIntyre and Goldberg began before the bell rang with the champion spearing the challenger in the ring. Goldberg returned the favour by spearing McIntyre through the barricade. Once the bell rang, the action was brief but incredibly explosive.

Twitter hails intensely physical contest

The match between the two alpha males with egos as big as their muscles had the potential to be a disaster. With the perfect outcome, the right amount of physicality, and a show of respect post-match, this made for quite an excellent affair. Fans praised the physicality in the match.

What’s next for champion and challenger?

With this loss, Goldberg can finally ride into the sunset. It should satisfy the WCW legend that he could still challenge for the top prize in the sport at 54. He might not be a box-office draw and is definitely not the one to be the face of WWE.

Drew McIntyre got what he deserves, retaining the WWE Championship and he will headline WrestleMania. McIntyre has built a reputation of an absolute beast in 2020, with his only losses coming against Randy Orton and Roman Reigns. WWE might declare a worthy opponent for the Scottish Warrior at tonight’s Royal Rumble.

As for Edge, he will have a colossal task ahead of him, going from #2 all the way to the end. However, if he ends up doing it, McIntyre vs Edge will be a classic for the ages.
