After going back and forth for two years with the Jacksonville-based promotion, CM Punk’s AEW ship finally sank with the official announcement of his firing from the company following the controversial backstage altercations at All In in London, UK.
The decision was solely taken by AEW Boss Tony Khan after getting outside legal counsel. While Punk wasn’t free from the tag of a dispute-puller, not everyone deems what Khan did to him as right. The includes pro wrestling veteran Jim Cornette.

The root of the problem emerged with a disagreement between Punk and Jack Perry regarding the usage of real glass at the launch of AEW Collision. The old scuffle culminated in a grueling backstage fight with Perry’s taunt at Punk during All In’s zero hour. It eventually saw a furious Punk threatening to leave AEW and engaging in a verbal clash with Khan. It brought him a temporary suspension. And before a week passed, CM Punk was gone from AEW.
While notifying the news in public, Khan stated he was scared for his life during the backstage fight for the first time in his professional career.
Some locker room members might have been convinced of the rationality of Khan’s decision. But Jim Cornette deems it as nothing but lame.

The pro wrestling veteran issued a tweet expressing his disgust with Khan’s dramatic claim. It reads ”I’ve been involved in a business filled with exaggeration & hyperbole for almost 50 years, & I have NEVER heard a single line of dialogue containing a more stunning, awe-inspiring metric fuckton of unadulterated bullsh*t in my life as I heard uttered tonight. #ScaredForHisLife”

However, keeping aside the debate of whether Khan’s decision is justified or not, let’s take a sneak peek into CM Punk’s roller coaster AEW stint
Throwback to CM Punk’s whirlwind AEW ride
After cementing his legacy in WWE, Punk set the entire wrestling world ablaze with his monumental AEW debut back in 2021. It was Punk’s much-anticipated return to the squared circle after seven years. With the company’s huge effort to appease him, he quickly rose to the rank of being the face of the brand with a World title run. A year on, Punk remains the center of discussion but for other reasons.
His real-life fight with The Elite last year put the camaraderie of the company into serious question. Controversy and injuries somehow covered a substantial part of his AEW timeline and marred the legacy of winning the AEW world championship title twice.
