Dwayne Johnson’s history with Fast and Furious

‘The Brahma Bull’ made his ‘Fast and Furious’ debut in the fifth installment, “Fast Five”. In the movie, Johnson played the role of Luke Hobbs. A DSS (Diplomatic Security Service) agent who is tasked with tracking down Dominic Toretto (played by Vin Diesel).

He would then go on to star in three other Fast and Furious movies, “Fast & Furious 6” (2013), “Furious 7” (2015), and “The Fate of the Furious” (2017). He became an integral part of the film franchise and one of the main actors in the cast. Next, he starred in the spin-off, ‘Hobbs & Shaw’. However, it would turn out to be the last ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise outing for Dwayne Johnson.

While he was rumored to be a part of the 9th Fast and Furious film; he did not appear in the film. After having problems with Vin Diesel, Johnson found it better to leave the franchise than share the screen with Diesel.

Why did Dwayne Johnson leave the ‘Fast and Furious’ franchise?

The 50-year-old Johnson is known for his humble and down-to-earth nature. However, after his beef with Vin Diesel became public, fans came to know how angry Johnson can get. Johnson and Diesel started having problems while shooting the films together. And it is even reported that the duo did not shoot a single scene together for some films of the franchise.

In 2021, Vin Diesel had taken to social media to request Johnson to return to the franchise. And even used his daughter’s name there. Johnson didn’t take this lightly and spoke up during an interview with CNN. He revealed during the interview that he had told Diesel about not returning to the franchise anymore, but will support them.

The Rock in one of his current deleted Instagram post had taken a shot at Vin Diesel. He would write the following while describing how it felt while shooting for the franchise, “My female co-stars are always amazing and I love ’em. My male co-stars however are a different story. Some conduct themselves as stand up men and true professionals, while others don’t. The ones that don’t are too chicken sh*t to do anything about it anyway. Candy a*ses.”

In an interview with Vanity Fair, he would claim that it was not one of his best days when he made the dig against Diesel. Although he has no regrets about it.

Further, he claimed that Diesel was trying to manipulate him. Whereas, he had justified his reasons and actions long ago. Diesel’s action of bringing family and late actor Paul Walker made him angry, and he said“Leave them out of it. We had spoken months ago about this and came to a clear understanding.”

In 2021, in an interview with Vanity Fair, Johnson also recalled a heated moment he shared with Diesel, and how it helped him seal his decision on whether to be a part of the future films. He revealed that they had a clear and heated conversation in their trailer. And it brought out a lot of things between them, and the two of them kept it there.

Johnson and Diesel would not shoot a single scene together for the eighth film, while Diesel would choose to skip out on Hobbs & Shaw.

This is one of the major reasons why fans did not see Johnson appearing in Fast and Furious 9. And also why he would not be appearing in the tenth film as well. The tenth film of the franchise, Fast X will have The Rock’s fellow pro wrestler John Cena and Jason Mamoa in it.

While fans were expecting a face-off between Cena and Johnson on the big screen, it may never occur. With the current status of Johnson and his stance, it is highly unlikely he will appear for the franchise ever again.

Will Dwayne Johnson ever reprise the role of Luke Hobbs?

The actor has let the fans know about his interest in reprising the role of Luke Hobbs. There has been no confirmation of it. However, despite the actor’s desire on playing the role, there might be some major disappointing update on it.

Kelly McCormick had revealed that, although they want a sequel to happen, there are no ongoing conversations around the film. She revealed that it is due to Dwayne Johnson’s busy schedule that the production of the film is missing out on being executed. McCormick would further reveal that the sequel is something they do not want to jump into, and instead craft carefully.

While Dwayne Johnson is not returning for ‘Fast and Furious 10’ (Fast X), he might be in line for the sequel for Hobbs & Shaw, if production on the movie starts eventually.
