AEW and WWE have been in direct competition soon after the former’s rise to existence. It isn’t a straightforward task to rise as a new promotion in a market already filled with well-established ones. However, Tony Khan‘s promotion is now among the top competitors of WWE. While the company still lags behind in some fields, being comparatively younger than that of Vince McMahon‘s, it recently broke a record set by its competitors.
With the help of their biggest PPV ever, AEW left behind the Stamford-based company’s record that they had set back in 2016. And now, a WWE legend, who jumped ships to AEW has predicted McMahon’s response to the emergence of a new rival.

The Big Show jumped ships over to AEW when he saw the new opportunity opening up. Even though the legend gathered acclaim for his time in WWE, he is now signed to Tony Khan’s promotion. Seeing the growth that the wrestling company achieved via its ‘All In’ PPV happening on 27th August at Wembley Stadium, London, Wight couldn’t help but talk about his former boss.
Paul Wight had a chat with Inside The Ropes and presented his view of McMahon’s mental state right now. “I think he is absolutely pissed, but he is also the type of guy, ok, he likes competition, he likes the challenge.” According to the former wrestler, McMahon has a ‘jungle mentality’. This means that he drives excitement as the level of competition gets higher. So, when this year’s ‘All In’ sold a total of 80,846 tickets, it broke WrestleMania 32’s record of selling 80,706 tickets, raising the bar for competition. The shocking part is that WM 32 was 2016’s biggest PLE for WWE.
The 51-year-old also believes, “If he’s got competition then it fires him up to be better, which is a win for the fans because they will get a better competition and we will produce a better product so it’s good too.” Hence, according to him, fans might get better results out of WWE’s creative team if AEW stays this competitive.
Despite Tony Khan beating McMahon’s record that his company established in 2016, WWE is still steps ahead of them. Coming to the present-day stats, we can see that WWE set a record for themselves while leaving AEW trailing behind

Even before Wight got the chance to guess McMahon’s mental state at AEW’s success, WWE was busy creating new milestones. Not long ago, the promotion opened a ticket sale for WrestleMania 40 which will take place in Philadelphia in 2024. The sale broke WWE’s all-time records as the opening day itself was an enormous success for the company. WWE sold over 90,000 tickets in one day alone for their PLE, which won’t be happening until April next year.
This broke AEW’s records for ‘All In’ as their biggest PPV ever only sold a little over 80,000 tickets in a span of several months. The stats showed wrestling fans the gap that Tony Khan needs to cross in order to compete shoulder-to-shoulder with WWE. And it looks like they may have started their journey already.
