The mask is an extremely important aspect for Mexican wrestlers. They make it a part of their outfit and rarely want to wrestle without the mask. However, Rey Mysterio had to take off his mask at one point or he would have lost his job.
This is a story from the time when Rey Mysterio was working with WCW. In the year 1999, Eric Bischoff came up with the idea that Mysterio had to lose his mask. However, he tried to tell Bischoff he wasn’t comfortable with it and was threatened with a breach of contract legal battle.
Mysterio was supposed to lose his mask in a match with Eddie Guerrero, but he tried his best to not unveil his face to the fans.

Following that, Mysterio and Konnan came together for SuperBrawl IX to take on Kevin Nash and Scott Hall for a mask vs hair match. When the former team lost, Mysterio had to discard his mask. While he wasn’t comfortable with this at all, this was his only choice. Otherwise, he would probably not have a job anymore.
He worked without his mask for the rest of his WCW career until Vince McMahon purchased the promotion. Rey Mysterio made a WWE debut with the mask back on. Since then, he has kept his mask with himself.
Rey Mysterio reveals who was responsible for the unmasking
The Mexican wrestler believes it was Scott Hall because of whom he had to remove the mask. He kept telling Mysterio to take it off. And eventually, it went to the top authorities. Finally, they decided to make him wrestle without the mask.
“Scott Hall was like ‘Rey what are you doing with that mask, you’re a pretty mother*****r man’. I was like ‘come on man, don’t start rumors’ and that led into another thing and you know, eventually they felt that it was time for me to wrestle without the mask.
