Paul Heyman might act all high and mighty as the ‘advocate’ of Roman Reigns. However, before he was the second-in-command to the Universal Champion, back in 2013, he was feuding with the ‘Best in the World,’ CM Punk.
Back in 2013, Heyman cost CM Punk his third money-in-the-bank contract. We will be discussing the reason later. More or less, Heyman felt embarrassed by Punk at WrestleMania 29.

Then began a feud to be remembered in WWE history. In one of the rarest instances, the veteran Heyman and the ultra-talented CM Punk created a feud that was not about wrestling at all.
After months of brawling with various “Paul Heyman guys,” Punk took matters into his own hands. On November 11, 2013, episode of Raw, Heyman stated that he was no longer with Ryback as Ryback never officially accepted his proposal to become a “Paul Heyman Guy”. After that, CM Punk came out to beat Heyman with a kendo stick.
Curtis Axel tried to fend Punk off, but that was of no use. A wheel-chaired Heyman sat helplessly as Punk threw him off and beat him repeatedly amidst crowd cheers.

Why did Paul Heyman and CM Punk start feuding?
Let’s refresh our memories. During his second and current tenure with WWE (starting in 2012), Paul Heyman began his association with both Punk and Brock Lesnar.
Both of them were bonafide “Paul Heyman guys.” WrestleMania 29 saw both of the clients facing heavyweights like the Undertaker and Triple H. However both Punk and Lesnar lost their matches.
Despite that, Heyman was not happy with Punk as evident by his behavior. After Heyman cost him a match with Chris Jericho, Punk told Heyman to leave him alone. This, in turn, saw Heyman betraying Punk, costing his the 2013 MITB contract as mentioned earlier.
Later on, Heyman claimed that Punk failed him by not beating Undertaker at WrestleMania 29, for not being able to beat Lesnar, and mocked Punk for having no family. Punk responded by saying that he was going to burn everything around Heyman and hurt him.
Before the Kendo stick incident, there had been lots of instances where Paul Heyman put Punk through worse. With the help of Lesnar, Curtis Axel, and Ryback, Punk was handcuffed, beaten up, and hit with the kendo stick. Punk’s action was nothing but retribution.

The feud could have been elongated but CM Punk left WWE after Royal Rumble that year. The summer of 2013 became all about the feud between Punk and Heyman.

However, its importance lies in a different place. Before this one, it had been a pretty long time since a non-title feud was the most interesting feud going on, but Punk and Heyman managed to outshine the WWE champion and his rival every week.
