When long-time members of the WWE leave or retire, it is always a sad day. However, with the recent departure of a 40-year-old associate of the WWE, the roster doesn’t seem to be severely affected by it. Moreover, they seem to be happy about it. This isn’t a common thing to see within the WWE, especially when they were close to Vince McMahon.
Why did this particular departure lead to the wrestlers feeling better about it? Especially when it was someone who worked with the company for 40 years?

Kevin Dunn has been with the WWE since 1984, spanning a career of 40 years. His endeavors with the company have left a lasting impact on the presentation and production of the product. His bond with Vince McMahon dates back to the previous generation.
Dunn learned everything he knew from his father, Dennis Dunn, who worked for Vince McMahon Sr. It took him four years to become the Line Producer of all WWE telecasts in 1988. In 2003, he was the Executive Vice President of Television Production. In 2008, he joined the WWE’s Board of Directors.
After 40 years of service, in December 2023, Dunn decided to leave the WWE. This resulted in many in the WWE Universe expressing their admiration towards the longtime employee. However, things were different in the locker room. According to reports, the WWE roster was happy that he was gone. Reports have quoted, “A lot of people [are] happy he’s gone. Kind of like a lot of people who were happy that Vince was gone. It’s almost like two peas in a pod.” This was due to the criticism Dunn gained during his time in the WWE.

There is no denying that McMahon wanted the WWE to be a source of entertainment far beyond what pro wrestling is. Dunn wanted to focus on this with his “Dunncam” and lack of in-ring camerawork. The now infamous Dunncam was his way of isolating the wrestler’s reactions rather than the in-ring action.

The esteemed WWE personality also prioritized the sport’s drama rather than the wrestlers’ in-ring skills. Being a long-standing worker in the WWE and serving under McMahon himself, Dunn’s decisions had a ton of weight. He was able to push the wrestlers he deemed worthy of a push.
