Vince McMahon Once Missed Out on an Opportunity to Change WWE Forever With an “Indiana Jones” Like Match

If there is one person in the history of the wrestling industry who has taken wrestling and developed it, it is Vince McMahon. But just like the biggest geniuses of any business, McMahon also made some grave mistakes. While many of them were replaceable, this one resulted in one of the most boring matches in the history of WWE.

But little by little Triple H has been bringing back the charisma and uniqueness that McMahon brought at the beginning of his career. But if McMahon would have stuck to this idea, it could’ve been a major point for WWE. Not only would the matches be amazing, but ratings would also have risen.

MLW founder Court Bauer opened up about his time in WWE, working as a writer. He said, “I had wanted to do a Deathmatch, Exploding Deathmatch in WWE. They were trying different things at this time. This was a time when they said ‘let’s try to relaunch ECW, let’s try different stuff.’ I showed Vince an Onita Exploding Deathmatch and he said ‘yeah, let’s do it.’ From there, they said ‘get with Kevin Dunn and his team, let’s get to work on it. I wasn’t the lead writer.”

“Vince liked an idea, and now it’s on someone else’s plate. We’ll circle back and that’s the lead writer’s job to communicate with [Kevin Dunn]. About 12, 14 days out we finally see the first photos of this thing being built. And it’s like ‘oh, that’s not an Exploding Deathmatch.’ It was supposed to be Undertaker in one of these things and it turns out to be what you’d see out of “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” or something.”

This would eventually become the structure for the Punjabi Prison. While it has not given us the best matches, it was a unique concept. Also, WWE used it sparingly through the years. While Triple H is bringing back the War Games gimmick, the exploding deathmatch could also be an addition to his reign and creativity. Bringing such an indie stipulation, Hunter would be bringing more eyes to the indie talent in the wrestling industry.
