The Undertaker is arguably the legendary WWE superstar who ever stepped foot in a wrestling ring. Mark Calaway has always thanked Paul Heyman to set up his meeting with Vince McMahon to become The Deadman and join WWE. 

However, Hulk Hogan has always claimed that he is the one to introduce The Phenom with Mr. McMahon. However, he recalled telling McMahon that The Deadman gimmick won’t work.

A few years back, Hulk Hogan narrated how he introduced Mark Calaway to Vince McMahon in an interview. Hogan claimed he met The Undertaker first before from WWE management did. 

Hogan said, “It’s kinda funny (how) The Undertaker came about. I was doing a movie called Suburban commando, and we really needed a couple of big aliens. We had one actor, and we needed another guy big enough. So I remember me and Mark, Mark Calaway, from gosh it was NWA. He was working in Atlanta, Georgia. So I had somebody find out and brought him to Hollywood.”

He added, “The Undertaker Mark Calway was one of the bounty hunters in the movie Suburban Commando. We became really good friends. I said once we’re done you really to come to New York. So I brought Mark Calaway to meet Vince. Vince took a long look at him, looked him up and down as he was a monster at 6’8” in really good shape. He said, ‘I’m gonna call you The Undertaker’.”

Surprisingly, The Undertaker joined WWE in October 1990, the same month in which they released the film across the USA. Taker wrestled in various promotions before landing in WWE. Initially, The Deadman wrestled in smaller promotions before signing with WCW and also spend some time in NJPW.

Hulk Hogan initially believed The Undertaker character won’t work

In the same interview, The Hulkster claimed he wasn’t sure if Vince McMahon was right, calling Mark Calaway The Undertaker. Hulk Hogan did not believe in the concept at the time.

Hogan said, “I just said, ‘Oh my god Vince, we’re training, saying our prayers, eating our vitamins. I said Vince, this will never work, the body bags and dead people, but I was wrong on that one. So The Undertaker was born.”

Further, Hogan recalled Mr. McMahon naming Calaway The Undertaker right in front of his eyes. He stated Taker gave his hundred percent to make the gimmick work.

The Hulkster praised Taker for all the great matches they’ve had and he particularly had in his 30 years career. Hogan said, “Mark Calaway has done a great job”.
