In 1992, Vince McMahon came about with the idea of launching a professional bodybuilding promotion. He wanted it to pose as a direct competitor to IFBB. At a 1990 event of IFBB, McMahon visited it and ropped in the athletes there using cunning techniques.
However, things did not go as per the plans. McMahon had launched WBF as a pro-wrestling style promotion for bodybuilding, with theatrics, promos, and entrances. However, Vince McMahon initially failed to understand that both wrestling and bodybuilding have two very different fan-bases, and cramming them together would not work.
After many bodybuilders failed their drugs-test, and the company had to go completely drug-free, many athletes showed up out of shape at the 1992 event. It failed to draw the attention of the fans, and the show just sold 3000 pay-per-view buys.

A month later from that event, McMahon rang up Ben and Joe Weider, the co-founders of IFBB. He called and informed them about the shutting down of WBF, and to allow the banned competitors from again participating in their events. This was something very unusual coming from the side of McMahon. Since he has always been egotistical.
