The Champ John Cena was the most anticipated surprise return for The Stupendous WrestleMania 38. However, fans would be disappointed to know that Cena won’t be appearing at this year’s WrestleMania.
Last month Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer reported that WWE was planning a “Steve Austin-level” surprise for WrestleMania. One of the names dropped by Dave was of John Cena. But now it appears that the 16-times World Champion will be missing the Biggest Show of the Year.

Vince McMahon and the company are still working on an Angle where they might make Stone Cold Steve Austin return to humble Kevin Owens. Even Owens has already dropped multiple hints at Steve Austin’s appearance. However, while Austin’s return looks possible, Cena is surely not returning at WrestleMania.
The Champ John Cena was never in plans for WrestleMania 38!
According to Ringside News, John Cena will not be a part of WrestleMania 38. The company creative member told Ringside, “Cena was discussed, as was everyone outside of religion and politics, but Cena was never a real possibility.”
Even Dave Meltzer earlier noted that John Cena’s Hollywood schedule wouldn’t allow him to appear at this year’s WrestleMania. It has been confirmed that the 16-times World Champion will continue his movie business during the two-night event.
Two years ago, The Champ John Cena made his last appearance at WrestleMania 36. Bray Wyatt defeated him in a cinematic ‘Firefly Fun House’ bout. John Cena was expected to return at WrestleMania 37 as well, but eventually, he did not.

Last year he was occupied filming the ‘Peacemaker’ television series, which led to him not appearing at WrestleMania.
When was Cena’s last appearance in the WWE?
Later, Cena surprised the WWE fans by returning at Money in the Bank 2021 to confront Roman Reigns. However, John Cena’s feud with Reigns did not last long. At SummerSlam 2021, The Tribal Chief and The Champ battled for the Universal Championship.
Roman Reigns retained his title and after that, Cena continued his journey to promote the ‘Peacemaker‘ series.

John Cena currently has no plans to return to the WWE. Cena’s leading DC character show, Peacemaker’s season one, became a hit recently. HBO Max has already pitched for the making of season 2.

The director James Gunn and John Cena will continue the project. Also, Cena has multiple Hollywood projects lined up for him. The WWE Universe has to wait until again John Cena makes a surprise appearance in the arena.
