Vince McMahon cares more about business than anything else. Doing what’s best for business is McMahon’s mantra in life, and he used the same mantra in WWE. At the end of the day, the storyline must deliver what is hot and in demand. The former Boss of WWE cannot go through with this without the help of wrestlers.

Matt Hardy recently revealed on his podcast, ‘The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy’. Vince McMahon gave clear instructions that he wants the match to look like an actual UFC fight. Considering it was to be part of a very hot ongoing rivalry between him and Edge made it even more extreme.

Vince McMahon fueled the rivalry and looked towards UFC for that

The rivalry arc between

Hardy and Edge was a highly exhilarating one. It started out with Lita cheating on Hardy. Lita and Matt Hardy started dating in 1999, but by 2004, the couple’s relationship was beginning to deteriorate. Lita started touring alongside her and Matt’s close buddy, Edge, after Matt Hardy had to stop travelling for more than a year due to a serious knee injury.

The match’s psychology was then discussed, along with how McMahon intended the action to develop. This led to a strange parallel in which he asserted that people are compelled by instinct to want to devour others in wheelchairs.

“So it’s not going to be a long match. I want to portray this as an MMA fight. This is like a UFC fight, right? I don’t want to see any hokey wrestling bullsh*t. [This] is going to be like a brawl, a fight short and effective. Matt’s in here, he’s kicking the sh*t out of you. You’re real piece of sh*t, Adam, so Matt kicks your a** the whole match,” Matt Hardy said on his podcast.

All of this shocked the Two. Both Edge and Matt Hardy. Both of them were just as clueless about what to do next and how to react to this information. A UFC-like fight without the actual damage was, of course, hard to replicate, but something people would love. It had to be something that was never done before and would go on to shoot up their careers.

Edge was crowned the victor of the match at SummerSlam after the referee called time on the contest. The rivalry persisted until the beginning of October, when Edge defeated Hardy in a “Loser Leaves Raw” ladder match and sent him to SmackDown.
