In 2010, UFC signed former world boxing champion James Toney to a multi-fight deal. The boxing legend who also starred with Hollywood actor Will Smith in the movie ‘Ali’ in 2001 started making headlines soon after his arrival at the UFC.
Before he made his debut in the UFC, Toney talked about striking in boxing being better than that in MMA and said he wanted to fight Brock Lesnar. Legendary UFC commentator Joe Rogan reacted to this news and gave Toney a reality check.
Rogan talked about Toney wanting to face Brock Lesnar
James Toney won multiple world championships as a boxer in three different weight classes. He held the IBF and lineal middleweight titles from 1991 to ’93 and also won the IBF super middleweight and world heavyweight titles.
At 41, he decided to make a foray into the UFC and signed with the biggest MMA promotion company. At that time, he was the NABO and IBA heavyweight title holder.
During an interview on Inside MMA, he spoke about boxing and MMA and expressed a desire to fight Brock Lesnar.
Joe Rogan talked about how he felt about Toney challenging one of the UFC’s fiercest fighters.
He said, “I’m hearing him say he’s going to fight Brock Lesnar. I’m hearing one of two things. Either I’m hearing he doesn’t give a s**t, he’s just here to get paid. Or I’m hearing he is crazy, and he thinks he will stop Brock Lesnar from taking him down by hitting him with a punch.”

Rogan said he thought both of those ideas were not good. He added, “Either one is not good. Because one means he is delusional and doesn’t really understand what this is all about, and the other one means he is a guy who is looking for money.”
Toney made his MMA debut against former UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture at UFC 118 in 2010. Couture won via submission as he took Toney to the ground with an arm-triangle choke. The former boxing champion didn’t fight for the UFC again and was released from his contract.
