Fans were not happy when it was revealed that Cody Rhodes would be taking a step back to make way for Dwayne Johnson. At the 02/02 episode of SmackDown, it was revealed that The American Nightmare will not be challenging Roman Reigns at the WrestleMania 40 and instead, The Rock would be the one to face him. This led to a massive uproar and fans have been calling out Johnson and WWE since then. While WWE is said to be closely monitoring social media trends, here are a couple of ways in which the company might make some changes following the backlash.

Cody Rhodes will have to face two threats in one night

This year will be the fortieth anniversary of the Show of the Shows, WrestleMania. So, for WrestleMania 40, WWE might think of making the main event for Day 2 an even grander spectacle. An obvious decision that the company might go with could be a triple threat match. This would mean that the company’s current top star, Cody Rhodes will have to face Johnson and Reigns in the same match to become the champion.

This might eventually work in Rhodes’ favor as it will add more weight to his story. Fans have been waiting to see the epic conclusion of The American Nightmare‘s story for years now. One of the final pieces of his story is to become the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion. Going against both the Samoan wrestlers will make the showdown even more nail-biting as both Johnson and Reigns have proven to be ruthless inside the ring.

Apart from that, let’s not forget that we are still weeks away from WrestleMania and anything could happen before it. While Rhodes willingly stepped away, a change in the story due to the backlash could very well happen.

While this is something that the creatives at WWE might think of, Dwayne Johnson might have another idea to counter the backlash.

A mentor in disguise

Fans are aware of how much Dwayne Johnson pays attention to his public reputation. It has taken him years to build an image that fans look up to. However, this news has harmed his image which has led to fans slaughtering him in the comment sections of his social media posts. To avoid any more damage, The Brahma Bull might make an announcement stating that instead of fighting Reigns, he will be a guest referee for the match.

Many former WWE stars have taken the role of guest referees in the past with the latest example being John Cena. The Leader of the Cenation was a guest referee for the LA Knight vs The Miz match at the 2023 Backlash and it was well received by fans. Apart from being a referee, there were multiple backstage segments in which Cena was seen mentoring Knight. Johnson might take the same route and mentor Rhodes to avoid any further negative PR. Let us know in the comments below which of the two options you think WWE will go with and why.
