Is Cody Rhodes winning the Royal Rumble without a Reigns match a missed opportunity for WWE?

The 2024 Royal Rumble was a landmark moment for Cody Rhodes, as it was the stepping stone of his biggest achievement in the realm of WWE so far. But when Rhodes pushed out CM Punk for the decisive win, the plan for him to wrap the Universal Championship belt in Philadelphia wasn’t written. The Rock’s abrupt arrival into the title picture pulled the rug negatively for the 39-year-old. Although the barriers resolved themselves later, WWE had many dilemmas in crowning him as the world champion back in January.

So why did the WWE then make him stand out in the epic 30-man battle? Well, Triple H’s commendable prudence emerges as the reason for this.

The Rock came out from a prolonged hiatus and immediately teased a fight with his Samoan cousin. This exciting notion sent Cody Rhodes’s aspirations into the backburner. Gradually, the speculations for Roman Reigns-The Rock clash became rife. This eventually irked fans to the level of inflicting a ‘We Want Cody’ mass protest. And Triple H might have seen it beforehand.

Hunter didn’t get convinced by The Rock’s idea to replace Rhodes in the Mania main event at all. He had his hunches about how the narrative could turn the other way anytime. So HHH chose to play the game by coming to a middle ground while proceeding with the Royal Rumble booking.

Speaking on WWE’s WrestleMania XL: Behind the Curtain documentary released today on YouTube, the CEO revealed, ”My gut was that if Cody fails here, it damages him. We got to have him win the Rumble. We got to see what the reaction is and then go from there.” On the other side of the coin, The Rock himself also came to a startling similar realization. The Brahma Bull poured cold water on the notion of forcefully inserting himself into the main event of WrestleMania.

Dwayne Johnson underwent a drastic transformation as he became the most loathed heel ever in his most recent WWE run. The usually wholesome and delightful Hollywood star didn’t hesitate to thrash The American Nightmare multiple times inside and outside the ring. The verbal warfare, teases, and attacks that ensued made it difficult to believe his concern for Rhodes. But The Rock is unpredictably generous and caring about the overall growth of the business. In the recently released WrestleMania documentary, The Brahma Bull admitted that he gave up on that rematch idea against Roman Reigns. The Hollywood star admitted that he didn’t want to upset the fans who were madly invested in Rhodes’ emotional saga. Johnson wanted to see the American Nightmare finish his story, and he did.
