WWE is keen on extending John Cena’s wrestling tenure from a marketing perspective. Following his appearance at WrestleMania 39 in April, Cena took an extended hiatus from wrestling, only to make a sudden and unexpected return.

With Cena’s comeback, the wrestling universe is buzzing with anticipation. Fans are eagerly speculating on WWE’s plans for the 16-time World Champion in its forthcoming events.

The company revealed that the 16-time World Champion will feature in eight SmackDown episodes during September and October.

As John Cena’s last SmackDown appearance approaches, WWE has a prime opportunity to make it extra special by incorporating these three intriguing elements. The next SmackDown will be on 27 October 2023 in Milwaukee.

Randy Orton’s Return

Randy Orton‘s absence since May 2022 has left fans eager for his return. Speculations about Orton’s comeback have been fueled by reports of him training at the Performance Centre in Orlando. Orton and Cena share a storied history, dating back to their Ohio Valley Wrestling days.

They are the famous OVW 4 batch of 2002 with Orton, Cena, Brock Lesnar, and Bautista. Their partnership, alongside Lesnar and Bautista, is legendary. Orton’s return for Cena’s farewell appearance could add an exciting twist to the occasion.

The Potential Return of CM Punk

CM Punk and Cena also share a rich history in the WWE, and rumors about Punk’s return have been circulating despite WWE’s denial. Punk was released from AEW in August 2023. Since then, the company has been dropping subtle references to Punk.

Such as Seth Rollins using the term “the best in the world” and Shinsuke Nakamura incorporating Punk’s GTS finisher. If WWE were to bring Punk back for Cena’s last SmackDown, it would undoubtedly create a buzz among fans.

Special Referee Role

One way to make Cena’s last SmackDown appearance truly special is to involve him as the special referee for a significant match. It’s possible for the contract signing between LA Knight and Roman Reigns. Although this idea is purely speculative, it could add an unexpected and memorable dimension to the event. Cena’s welcoming of Reigns and LA Knight suggests an interesting dynamic and raises questions about Knight’s worthiness as Reigns’ challenger.

By combining these elements, WWE can craft a memorable and extraordinary send-off for John Cena on his final SmackDown appearance. It will leave fans excited and eager to tune in.

Despite his increased WWE appearances, there’s talk of Cena returning to Hollywood after the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Will John Cena leave WWE after post SAG-AFTRA strike?

John Cena’s WWE comeback amid the SAG-AFTRA strike has attracted significant attention. However, ongoing negotiations between the actors’ guild and AMPTP may limit his wrestling career. Cena has openly discussed the challenges of balancing wrestling with acting due to liability insurance concerns. Cena had a press conference recently after WWE Fastlane.

He said, “I’ve made it clear that you can’t do both because of the liability insurance. If I were to try and juggle both, that’s very selfish because I would put a whole lot of people in the movie business out of work if something were to happen to me.”

He continued, “Yes, I stopped a project in the middle of it. I can’t even talk about the project because of the strike, but we’re in the middle of it. As soon as we get back to work, we go back to work. I don’t control any of that.”

He emphasized his commitment to a positive contribution during the strike, despite potentially halting a project. In a prior interview, Cena hinted at the possibility of retirement from professional wrestling. He said, “As I said out there in the ring, the last one is not tonight, but I know it’s soon. Every single chance I get to go out there becomes more and more special. There is no denying the fact that I’m 46 and staring down 47. I’ve been here for over two decades.”
