Almost after two years following a WWE release, Chelsea Green finally returned to the Stamford-based company during Royal Rumble earlier this year. Ever since the former Impact Knockout Champion has played a comedic ‘Karen’ type character. The wrestler’s persona has clicked pretty well with the fans and is a resounding success.

The term Karen is used to derogate middle-class white women who often whine about things unnecessarily. Green resembles that trait to some extent as she complains about the state of affairs to Adam Pearce. Thus, her on-screen character made sense. But this popular gimmick idea has not emerged from her head, nevertheless.

In the present age, the internet takes up a lot of space in the world of sports. With WWE, we often know accurate fans’ perspectives or the details about matches beforehand with the help of the internet. Especially with social media. But can you believe the internet to pitch an entire WWE character, making the creative load lighter for the person authorized?

Well, this is what happened in reality with Chelsea Green’s ‘Karen’ gimmick. The 32-year-old herself admitted that her present gimmick is something she adopted from a random post on the internet. Appearing in the Out of Character with Ryan Satin podcast episode, Green noted, ”My favorite thing to do is to come up with pitches that are so ridiculous and out there.

But this time, it was not she who came up with the idea of Karen. Explaining the origin of Karen, the former Impact wrestler continued, ”I believe it was about 1 PM that I saw on the internet that ‘Chelsea is going to debut with a Karen character.’ I went up to someone and went, ‘What is this? I’m coming out for the Royal Rumble, and I’m me. What is happening?’ Maybe a couple of hours later, they came back and were like, ‘We’ll deal with that once the Rumble is over and sort out your character.’ I was like, ‘I want to start it tonight. If I don’t win this thing, when I get out of the ring, I’m going to start being a Karen.’ I just did it.”

However, while Chelsea seems to have a lot of fun portraying ‘Karen’ on WWE TV, she will never be able to get over her former character, ‘Hot Mess’

Chelsea Green loves her ‘Hot Mess’ version the most

Green has fully embraced her current run as ‘Karen’, but she believes her ‘Hot mess’ self will continue to peep through, regardless. In fact, she doesn’t really keep her present gimmick apart from the past one. Rather, Green thinks Karen is nothing but an evolution of her previous persona. ‘Hot Mess’ was a gimmick that crept close to her heart for sure, and it will be forever. As a result, the star could only improvise her character in new and different shades without really walking out on it.

Chelsea, in real life, is more like the ‘Hot Mess’ she once played, contrary to what many believe. That dramatic, goofy inner self of Green used to break through the iconic gimmick. It still does in the form of ‘Karen’, just without that theoretical makeup. It was all the same, the new version of that same old ‘hot mess’ for Chelsea.

Now, we need to see how her new gimmick will help her stand out among the other talents on the roster. Well, even if it doesn’t help much, she can always go and complain about it to the manager just like ‘Karen’ does.
