WWE made a milestone announcement regarding the women’s division titles on this week’s Friday Night’s SmackDown episode. Hours before the show kicked in, the company revealed its plan to pull off a special segment.

As many wrestling fanatics might have known, the company introduced a new belt, the WWE Women’s Championship, and presented it to the RAW Women’s Champion Asuka. Now, we can expect another new title for SmackDown Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley as well, during next week’s RAW episode. Primarily it looks like WWE came up with the massive idea to make the brand switching convenient for both Raw and SmackDown champions. But a recent report suggests some deeper reason exists behind the groundbreaking move.

As surprising as it may sound, the major creative decision of WWE materialized after current Woman’s Tag Team Champion Ronda Rousey cleared her stance on moving into the tag team division months ago following her SmackDown title loss. The 36-year-old jumped ship to the tag team scenario alongside Shayna Baszler.

Shortly after, she criticized WWE over the poor handling of the women’s division, especially the tag team division.

A recent report suggests WWE giving thought to bringing some big changes in the women’s titles’ picture can be dated back to the Rowdy One, ensuring his tag team division alliance.

The report says, ”Fightful reports the wording on this tweet “WWE Women’s Championship” was intentional & clarity on it will be provided tonight.

”We’ve been told that the decision to have that happen occurred after Ronda Rousey made it clear she would rather compete in the tag team division.”

Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler knocked down the tandems of Raquel Rodriguez and Shotzi, Bayley, Iyo Sky, and Chelsea Green and Sonya Deville in a fatal 4-way tag team match to clinch the WWE Woman’s Tag Team Championship belts last month.

A unification of NXT Women’s Tag Title and main roster Woman’s Tag Titles is around the corner

Dawn and Fire sat for an interview with Kayla Braxton at last night’s SmackDown. Baszler stormed to the ring out of nowhere to interrupt. She even issued a chilling threat to the current NXT champions. Rousey and Baszler then made a cocky claim, spitting the fact straight that they need their titles. They even claimed that the company can’t afford to keep two sets of Woman’s Tag Team Champions.

The NXT tag team champions readily accepted the challenge, leading to a feud between two pairs of current tag team champions.

WWE later made the title unification match official for the June 23 episode of SmackDown.
