2020 was a difficult year for the world. The sudden onset of the Covid-19 pandemic brought along a global standstill. Wrestling like any other event-based sport also bore the heavy brunt. The fans are an important part of the wrestling landscape, and holding shows in an empty arena posed a major headache for WWE. They had to improvise in order to sustain in difficult circumstances. And in came the cinematic matches, most notable of which would be the Boneyard match between The Undertaker and AJ Styles at WrestleMania 36.

Even before the annual showpiece, the rumor mills were speculating that the innovative match would be the final of The Phenom’s legendary career.

It did make complete sense for a wrestler whose career-long gimmick was based on supernatural elements. But the strict covid protocol at the time meant that only a few were allowed near the match’s filming. And a former NXT champion has recently revealed that he was among the lucky few.

Johnny Gargano currently performs on the red brand and recently responded to a fan’s query online. The fan had speculated that Gargano was present during the filming of the aforementioned match. The wrestler indeed confirmed the news.

Gargano did attend The Boneyard match’s filming

He responded, “Given the historical significance of it potentially being Undertaker’s last Mania match at the time.. Me, Candice and Tommaso asked Hunter if we could go watch the filming and he let us come by and check it out! Definitely, a cool moment to look back on.

The match turned out to be an exciting affair. Various cinematic cuts and visual effects added to the overall intrigue of the match. Both Taker and Styles were at the top of their game throughout the encounter. The Phenom even overcame interference from Styles’ loyalists, The O.C. to eventually win the match.

The Undertaker finally announced his retirement

The clash did turn out to be The Undertaker’s farewell match. This news was confirmed by The Deadman himself in the Survivor Series event in 2020. Finally, bringing down the curtains on a decorated career that started 30 years ago in the same event in 1990. Needless to say that the match would forever be treasured by wrestling fans.

Johnny Gargano, Candice LeRae, and Tommaso Ciampa would have felt privileged to witness the historic match. Triple H also deserves credit to see to it that they got this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Millions would have watched the spectacle on a screen, but only a few got to experience it firsthand.
