Staying true to the character in pro wrestling is the crux of the game. It’s required for the superstars to not give up the gimmick during the show. And in some cases throughout their career.
It is widely believed that the Undertaker gimmick of Mark Calaway is the best gimmick in history. Throughout his career, as The Undertaker Calaway never gave up his act. He tried to keep his public appearance outside of WWE to a minimum grade. Only after his retirement do the fans get to see the real person behind The Undertaker.

One time, Mark Calaway told a hilarious story about The Ultimate Warrior to Corey Graves in his podcast, After The Bell. In the initial days of Undertaker’s career, they introduced him as a supernatural wrestler who can’t get hurt. The Ultimate Warrior got confused during their match when he did not see The Deadman react to his thrashings.

“The character was a monster. I didn’t sell that much. I remember one night, Ultimate Warrior, he’d been beating on me and pounding and me and just everything. Knock me down, I’m sitting back up, I’m coming back up. Finally, he goes, and I thought I was, but evidently, I wasn’t. He goes, ‘Mark, are you going to sell anything tonight?’ It’s like, ‘Okay. Here we go. Alright, let’s do this. Let’s try that.’” said Calaway.
The Ultimate Warrior and Undertaker’s feud
The rivalry of both wrestlers continued for a while. As part of their efforts to protect The Undertaker’s never getting hurt gimmick, they disqualified him from several matches. He was able to defeat The Undertaker fair and square one time only by pinfall. Ultimate Warrior defeated many WWE legends, including The Hollywood Hulk Hogan. But WWE soon suspended the Ultimate Warrior after he demanded more money for his future matches after holding the main event.

There was a long-standing rivalry between the two wrestlers. The Ultimate Warrior, aka James Brian Hellwig, passed away in 2014. WWE inducted James Hellwig into the Hall of Fame. Even after 30 years of their rivalry, Calaway remembered that story. It’s remarkable how Mark Calaway stayed true to his gimmick for 30 years.
