WWE Superstar AJ Styles recently sat down with Sports Illustrated in a tell-all interview, focused on the Boneyard Match at Wrestlemania 36, with The Undertaker. Styles spoke about the entire creative process behind the Boneyard Match, and the way in which the match came to be.

This match was a departure from the normal way wrestling matches are executed. Styles spoke about how different it was for him to ‘wrestle’ The Undertaker in the Boneyard.

“Everything changed when we were told we were doing a Boneyard match. All the ideas we had were thrown out the window, they just weren’t going to work.

Styles revealed that he and The Undertaker could not see this match as a normal bout at Wrestlemania. The location made it so that traditional rules of wrestling matches wouldn’t work. There were no audience members, no bright lights, or even a ring as a matter of fact.

Styles spoke about how he and The Undertaker had to adapt. People got to see a Tombstone and maybe a chokeslam, but those were all the wrestling moves we did. You don’t really notice it because the fight was entertaining enough, but those other moves didn’t really fit in the Boneyard match. That was a fight.

A ‘Phenomenal’ rematch with The Undertaker?

Styles also spoke about a potential rematch with the Undertaker. Mark Calaway (the man behind The Undertaker) has made it clear that he is currently retired. However, the pro-wrestling business is infamous for its old Superstars making a triumphant return.

Many veterans past their prime have been pulled back into the spotlight by Vince McMahon, whenever WWE TV ratings take a dip. So, it is reasonable to assume that the Undertaker isn’t completely out of the game.

Styles’ speculations of a rematch with the Undertaker may just come true. “There is still hope. The Undertaker is going to have one more match. You can’t blame him if he decides that this is it. I don’t know how he feels about it. I still have ideas of what we’d do in the ring.

Styles mentioned that he would keep all of his ideas in store, waiting for his potential rematch with the Deadman. I’m going to save them [his ideas] if he ever wants us to have that opportunity together in the ring. It’s all up to Taker, but I’m holding onto those spots.
