Sting and Triple H, two icons of the pro wrestling business that were once rivals, are on a kind of similar path again. This time, Sting isn’t in WWE though. ‘The Icon’ is signed full time with AEW, so it’s the Wednesday Night War he’s a part of.
Why Triple H defeated Sting at WrestleMania 31
‘The Franchise’ signed with WWE in 2014 and made his debut at that year’s Survivor Series by attacking Triple H. This ignited a feud between the two that led to match at WrestleMania 31. This also served as Sting’s debut match in the WWE.

Everyone expected the Stinger to win this match, but the exact opposite happened. Although there was an infamous appearance from NWO and DX members, Triple H secured a clean victory over Sting at the grandest stage of them all.
The outcome of the match did not sit well with fans. Many questioned the reason for ‘The Game’ to claim the win over a debuting superstar. They felt that the result should have been flipped with ‘The Franchise’ standing tall at Levi’s Stadium.
In the WWE Untold: Sting’s Last Stand documentary, Triple H spoke of how the match between him and Sting came to be. He also revealed that he defeated Sting to go strong into the match against The Rock next year. Unfortunately, the planned Rock vs HHH match never happened.
“You know there are people who’ll say, ‘Well…’, I should’ve put him over to give him the moment and that’s arguably — to say that you should’ve… The Rock situation made that impossible, which didn’t happen, but that’s the truth of it. Are there things that could’ve been done differently? I don’t know that it took away from anything.” H/t Ringside News

Sadly, because of The Rock’s busy movie schedule that couldn’t happen and it was just a teaser that we could all see.
