Ten years ago, if wrestling fans were asked if a YouTuber could be a wrestler, the answer would be a resounding no. A second question: Could that YouTuber’s third match in the WWE be for the WWE Universal Championship at Crown Jewel? The answer would be the same. Despite what all the naysayers said about Logan Paul in the WWE, he proved them all wrong. Paul appeared in the WWE in 2021 before signing a multi-year contract the following year.

Today, he stands tall alongside the mid-carders on the show and has garnered a legion of fans. This was the setup for what, at the time, was considered a huge match, Cena vs Paul at Wrestlemania. Although this match never took place, the thoughts about what this match could encompass are still talked about. This was one of the topics mentioned on Café De René Livestream #115 with René Duprée, Mike Maraldo, and James Tunstall.

During the livestream, a fan posed the question about a Cena vs Paul match at WrestleMania 40. This got the trio’s attention, and Duprée was the first to answer. He said, “I mean, if that’s gonna draw money. They think that’s gonna create buzz, and I guess it would, right?” To this, his co-hosts agreed. The trio were skeptical whether the match was real or just a rumor. Regardless, they shared their opinions on the matter.

“Logan Paul knows how to get himself over, and he’s proven he’s one hell of an athlete and seen as a made man, so yeah, I can see it,” Duprée added. His words got the nod of approval from his co-hosts. Before ending the segment, Tunstall asked if Cena would put Paul over. Duprée asked who was in charge, Triple H or Vince McMahon, before changing to the topic. Despite not giving a clear-cut answer, it is obvious that even former WWE stars know the match would create a buzz.

The reason why the Cena vs. Paul match didn’t happen

According to Sean Sapp of Fightful, the WWE initially pencilled in a Cena vs Paul match for WrestleMania 39. However, like every WrestleMania, the plans deteriorated during the November and December planning phases. According to the reports, the WWE was unsure how to handle this match and went ahead with the planning of other matches and feuds. At WrestleMania 39, Cena faced and lost to Austin Theory.

There were rumors that Cena could come face-to-face with Paul at SummerSlam 2023. SummerSlam, being the second grandest event of the WWE, would be a great place to start the feud. Unfortunately, from SummerSlam to WrestleMania 40 would be a long road. With Cena and Logan being a part-timer, it would be hard to keep the feud running that long. We still have no official word on whether the match could take place, but fans have their fingers crossed.
