The Undertaker retired from his storied WWE career in 2020 by wrestling his last match against AJ Styles at WrestleMania 36. But a few years before his final match, ‘The Deadman’ looked like he had called it a day after losing to Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 33. Taker left gear inside the ring, seemingly announcing his retirement.
After Taker hung up his boots, his wife and former WWE Women’s Champion Michelle McCool revealed that there was one more gesture of his husband that night, which convinced her of his retirement.

Injuries troubled The Undertaker in the latter part of his career. Going into WrestleMania 33, the WWE Hall of Famer looked out of sorts. Even during his match against Reigns, it was played out that he had reached the end of his career and could not cope with the more agile and intense Samoan.
In 2020, McCool said how she thought The Undertaker was done after breaking character following his loss.
McCool thought The Undertaker had closure
Michelle McCool was talking about episode two of The Undertaker’s documentary: The Last Ride and gave an insight on the events of WrestleMania 33. She spoke about how she thought ‘The Phenom’ was done as an in-ring competitor following his loss to Reigns.
She said, “Yeah, it was when he kissed me..he has protected that character for so long. That was the first time ever he laid his coat and everything before. That threw me for a second. I was like, ‘oh he’s done.’”
Michelle McCool believed his husband had closure after this gesture.
She added, “I really thought he had the closure he needed. That was kind of his goodbye to the fans in a way too[…] That was the moment I was like.. He may mean it this time.”

But the situation changed after The Undertaker’s successful hip surgery. McCool said she realized he might return to the ring since he was feeling better.
And she was proven right. The Undertaker returned to face John Cena in an impromptu match at WrestleMania 34, winning within three minutes. A few weeks later, he would wrestle again; this time, defeating Rusev in a casket match at the Greatest Royal Rumble event.
