At the start of August, many wildfires started out in Hawaii, mainly on the island of Maui. Over 2,200 buildings have been destroyed in the Lāhainā area alone and the total damage is estimated at about $6 billion. This prompted Johnson to get in touch with Oprah Winfrey to see what they could do to help. This fund was initially set up by Country singing legend Dolly Parton for the fire in Gatlinburg in 2016. Johnson and Winfrey put out a video detailing how all of this actually began. Oprah said, “I was sent a message about Dolly Parton’s fund that she started for the people of Gatlinburg when there was a tragedy and fire in Gatlinburg, and she called it The People’s Fund, actually My People’s Fund she called it where money was sent directly to each individual. And this idea all started because of Dolly, Thankyou Dolly”.

She then later sent this to Johnson who was really happy with the idea. He also said, “We were texting when this tragedy took place and the idea was what can we do, How do we help? What do we do? Can we create something? Do we support something that’s already in place?”
