Hulk Hogan defined pro wrestling in America in the 1980s. He was an All-American Hero with a shredded physique who was loved by the vast fandom. His 24-inch biceps put many renowned bodybuilders to shame. However, all this was tainted to a certain extent, after allegations of steroid use by The Hulkster came up.

In the early 1990s, WWE was rocked by allegations of steroid use by its wrestlers. Amid this controversy, their biggest star, Hulk Hogan, appeared on national television in 1991 and categorically denied the use of steroids. A few years later, he would admit to substance abuse.

One of pro wrestling’s first stars, ‘Superstar’ Billy Graham revealed in an interview that Hogan was doing steroids even before he came to WWE.

Billy Graham talked about Hulk Hogan using steroids

Hulk Hogan, with his substantial muscular physique, came under scrutiny during the steroid scandal of WWE in the 1990s. The former WWE Champion made an appearance on the Arsenio Hall Show in 1991 and denied these allegations. He also mentioned Billy Graham as a heavy steroid abuser.

This caused a lot of furor among those who knew of Hogan’s history of taking steroids. Graham, in an interview with ‘The Hannibal TV’, talked about how he first met Hogan in 1976 at a bar in Tampa and admitted to taking steroids.

He revealed, “He said I want to ask you two questions. How do I become a professional wrestler and how do I take steroids? I said taking steroids is easy. You just take a shot every day all day I was kind of laughing as I was saying it as a joke. And he said, well I’ve been doing that for the last year. I’ve been giving myself a shot of testosterone almost every day on my right hip. He said I have a scar tissue about the size of a golf ball on my hip.”

The ‘Superstar’ himself admitted to taking steroids before his wrestling career began. He said, “I had been taking steroids for five years before I started wrestling in mid 60’s.”

Hogan would later admit to substance abuse in his book, ‘My Life Outside the Ring’. For many fans who grew up idolizing Hogan, his drug history was an enormous shock.

But, even though the drug scandal did hit the popularity of ‘Hulkamania’, he was able to pull through it. He would continue to be the top draw in WWE and after he left the company, he changed the landscape of wrestling yet again with WCW and nWo in the late 1990s.
