April 5, 2020, the date when the WWE Universe saw The Undertaker competing as a wrestler for the last time. He fought against AJ Styles at WrestleMania 36 in a cemetery. In the match, ‘The Deadman’ buried Styles inside a grave to win the match and rode off into the sunset. The set-up was just perfect to showcase the departure of The Undertaker from the wrestling world after staying there for more than three decades.

No matter if anyone is a fan of professional wrestling, rarely watches it, or has never seen any match or promotion, everyone is aware of The Undertaker. This WWE legend is known for his supernatural gimmick among people all over the globe.

Not just the fans, but The Undertaker has also left several other wrestlers impressed with his in-ring work and professionalism. Recently, former WWE tag team champion Matt Hardy also recalled ‘Taker’s behavior and what was it like to meet him for the first time.

Wrestling veteran talked about The Undertaker’s wrestling persona

The former WWE superstar Matt Hardy talked about the moment when he first met WWE legend The Undertaker on his podcast, ‘The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy’. Remembering the moment, Matt said that when he saw ‘The Deadman’ for the very first time, he was not in his popular WWE gimmick. Although his look was quite intimidating, he was talking about regular stuff. 

Matt Hardy said, “I remember when we first came to do enhancement work at WWE, I remember the first time we saw Undertaker walk, he literally walked in with his hat, these blackout shades. He had on all black and had a long black trench coat, not a gimmick coat, a regular trench coat.”

He continued, “We heard them talking about how they’d been out real late last night and had been a big party night or whatever. But he came in looking like such a gangster.” He further explained that The Undertaker was really cool and quiet at the same time. ‘The Phenom’ always maintained his WWE character strictly and stayed in his gimmick even outside the realm of WWE for a long time.

Hardy stated, You know, like, holy sh*t, this guy’s like, he’s f**king the legit deal. He’s really cool, and he’s rocking the look, and he acted very stoic, and he was very quiet. He very much maintained his presence around outsiders………If he would come around to TV and there were TV people there, there were extras there, he kind of stayed in gimmick more than most people would.”

Recently, the WWE Hall of Famer came forward and discussed how wrestling fans nowadays feel less connected to the in-ring character of professional wrestlers, as they know a lot about their personal lives. He mentioned that it is the reason why the creative find it difficult to produce engaging storylines.

As Matt Hardy mentioned, The Undertaker used to be quite strict about his in-ring character. He rarely broke his character even outside the ring. And that was one of the main reasons for his success as ‘The Deadman’
